Chiropractic Adjustments - Diversified Technique

Diversified manipulation is the most widely used technique in the chiropractic field. It focuses on restoration of normal biomechanical function as well as correction of joint dysfunction. It is this technique that generally results in a popping sound as the chiropractor manually adjusts the misaligned or restricted spinal segments of the neck or back. Diversified methods have also been developed to adjust extremity joints, allowing for beneficial applications in treating sports and repetitive work injuries.

The term “adjustment” refers to the specific manipulation chiropractors apply to vertebrae that have atypical movement patterns or fail to function normally.

The objective of the chiropractic treatment is to reduce joint restriction for increased range of motion, reduced nerve irritability and improved function.

To determine which vertebral segments are in need of an adjustment, the chiropractor will use his hands to examine the spine (palpation). X-ray examination may also be utilized to locate dysfunctional vertebral segments.

The adjustment made by the chiropractor consists of a high velocity, short lever arm thrust applied to a vertebra, which is often accompanied by an audible release of gas (joint cavitation). The audible sound is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, which relieves joint pressure. The sensation is usually relieving, though short term minor discomfort has been reported if the surrounding muscles are in spasm or the patient tenses during the chiropractic procedure.
